Language Arts
In the area of reading, the following reading strategies will be utilized:
- Reader's Workshop (students reading novels of their choice);
- Literature Circles (students reading the same leveled novels in small groups), and
- Guided Reading using the District's Hougthon Mifflin Reading series.
- ExCEL has also become a major component of the sixth grade language arts program; and
- In grammar the students learn sentence structure and parts of speech.
In the area of writing the students learn different genres of writing including:
- Research reporting
- Descriptive essays
- Narrative essays
- Persuasive essays
- Expository essays
- Poetry
Math
The sixth grade uses a variety of methods to teach math. To meet the needs of students we utilize a wide variety of materials that help our students practice the concepts taught in class:
- Scott Forseman, textbook
- Algebra Puzzles Problems
- Reproducibles
- Mountain Math
Social Studies
The sixth grade focus is on the study Ancient Civilizations of the world. This includes work with geography as well, with many activities to increase our students ability to read and understand different types of maps. The curriculum includes the study of prehistory through the fall of the Roman Empire.

Concepts covered in the sixth grade science curriculum are:

Physical Education
Students in sixth grade participate in the Marathon Miler once a week. The goal of this program is for each student to walk/jog 26 miles by the end of the year. In addition, once a week, the students work with Mr. Owen, the Physical Education teacher for the District.
